She was appointed cocaptain. Rapinoe, who scored two goals for the United States in the 4-3 victory over Australia in the Olympic bronze medal match at Tokyo in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic which Japan had to delay until 2021 because of this pandemic, also was awarded the gold medal at Tokyo in 2016.
